The Sound and the Fury, published October 7, 1929, was Faulkner's fourth novel.  Though it immediately became famous in literary circles, it did not achieve a wide American audience until after it was added to The Modern Library in 1946.  The plates for the text of this new edition were produced photographically from a copy of the first printing, which has fewer errors than the 1946 edition.  However opinions may differ as to which of Faulkner's novels is the "greatest" or "best," there is no doubt that The Sound and the Fury is now the most in demand.  As the author put it in Faulkner in the University (a Vintage Book): "...well, best is the wrong word—that's the one that I love the most."
